Who’s A-Frey’d of the Big Bad Wolf?
Self-appointed “bad boy” of publishing James Frey is one of our targets, whoops – topics, tonight. Frey’s first book A Million Little Pieces, a purportedly autobiographical account of the author’s struggle with addiction, was subsequently proved to be untrue, and cost Random House millions in legal fees. Frey’s latest venture is just as controversial – a sweatshop-type operation that employs budding authors to write books on his behalf.
“Exploitation!” says Cath Murphy. “Clever marketing!” says Jamie Mollart. Dave Bartram points out that ateliers are far from unusual in the art world – “Famously”, he says, “Gainsborough would just paint the faces, and leave the boring bits to his pupils… but the picture was still a Gainsborough.” And as for Nic Alderton… well, you’ll just have to listen to find out what he thinks.
