My Vacuum Cleaner Sucked Out My Soul
Before James Frey there was… JT LeRoy. Remember him – or rather, her? A grand literary fraud perpetrated by one Laura Albert, LeRoy’s story of prostitution, drug addiction and vagrancy became a cause célèbre finally ending in recriminations and, inevitably, lawsuits. One of which at least is still ongoing, for Albert is currently suing Bloomsbury Publishing in a Manhattan Federal Court for damages, claiming that the publisher both used royalties she was due to settle a lawsuit, and blew a golden opportunity to promote her work following a 2007 fraud trial. She says that the publisher’s so-called blunder helped relinquish her novels to the remainder bin. Tonight, Donna Ballman asks why don’t we all invent a persona and write a memoir? A hermaphroditic sumo wrestler turned teen model, maybe? It can’t hurt the publicity, can it?
